What Is a Routing Number?

The bank routing number, also known as the ABA routing transit number, is a nine-digit bank code. These digits are used to identify the financial institution that is associated with the bank check.

In 1910, the American Bankers Association developed and established the system to make it easier and more organized for banks to sort, bundle, and deliver paper checks to the issuing bank. In turn, this makes it easier for banks to transfer funds.

The digits we see in the routing number are split into two. The prefixes represent the geographic location. For example, these may represent significant cities or regions of the United States. Meanwhile, suffixes represent the banking firms that are located in a specific geographic location.

Routing numbers are needed to perform several transactions with the bank. Therefore, in the case that you will be performing any of the transactions below, make sure that you have taken note of your routing and account numbers:

  • Making a payment via phone or online
  • Making automatic bill payments
  • Processing of checks
  • Transferring money internationally

ABA vs. ACH Routing Numbers

As mentioned before, routing numbers are essential in facilitating different bank transactions. However, there are instances that banks will ask you for the ABA or the ACH routing number, depending on the transaction. While most banks have the same routing number for both types, it’s always a good idea to double-check with your bank. Therefore, we discuss the difference between the two:

ABA

ABA stands for the American Bankers Association routing number, establishing these bank codes. These codes are used to identify the banks and financial institutions in the United States. In addition, the ABA routing number is used for clearing checks and transferring money by wire transfer.

ACH

ACH stands for Automated Clearing House routing numbers are the bank codes used for electronic transactions between financial institutions. This code is unique to banks and their branches. This is used to identify the clearinghouse.

Finding the Routing Number

Locating your routing number is easy and can be done in several ways. You can find it by looking at the paper check or searching for it online.

Paper Check

This method requires you to have a paper check or checkbook. On the paper check, you will notice that there are three sets of numbers that are printed at the bottom. The first set on the left-most is composed of nine digits. This is your routing number.

BECU routing number from checking account

The second set is composed of ten to twelve digits and is located in the middle. This is your account number. Meanwhile, the last group is composed of fewer digits. This is your check number.

Online

If you don’t have any paper checks with you, you can search for the routing numbers online. You can also do this if you’re looking for the ACH routing number or the wire transfer number.

Most banks usually have this information on their websites. Ensure that you know the US state and branch where you opened your account. Some banks also provide this information on their mobile apps. Ensure that you have signed up for an online account with the bank.

  7. This is an interesting list, but it is one of the reasons I dislike how the banks keep banning these kinds of methods of communication, even if the number is actually pretty good. I have found them to be a bit annoying and annoying for any small business… but this one seems to also be a bit disingenuous to me in that its so obvious they’re actually getting into business just to find out what to charge them, and if they even start doing this, they’d be doing all the right things.
